Cape Town - Bloemfontein

The route from Cape Town to Bloemfontein on the National Road N1 is part of the most important and the fastest connection between the Cape and Johannesburg. That is why you will encounter a lot of traffic when travelling this route.

Starting in Cape Town, the N1 first leads through the beautiful Cape Winelands, and detours to Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch are recommended. Then the road inclines steeply and after passing the Huguenot Tunnel (toll road) the first level of the mighty escarpment lies behind you.

After leaving Worcester the road leads through the arid South African highveld, called the "Karoo". The Karoo National Park near Beaufort-West renders insight into the special flora and fauna of this region. If you have the time, take a trip to Prince Albert, an authentic Karoo village surrounded by dramatic nature and with excellent accommodation.
