Springbok - Johannesburg
The
N14 runs from Springbok along the Kalahari Basin through the Northern
Cape and North West Province up to Johannesburg.
A visit to the Augrabies Falls National Park with its spectacular gorges
and falls is worth your while.
The N 14 route runs past the Barberspan Birdsanctuary, the largest natural
waterpan in South Africa. It will take you through the cattle farms
in the Northern Cape and the western part of the North West Province
and the corn fields of the central and eastern region of the North West
Province. You will pass many historical battle fields of the Anglo Boer
war. The diggers still find diamonds in the corn fields.
Upington,
green oasis at the Orange, offers good service and accommodation and
is a good base vor a visit of the Kgalagadi
Transfrontier Park in the Kalahari. The access to the southern
restcamp Twee Rivieren is sandy from Askham on, yet manageable in a
normal car. This applies to the entire park, although there might be
problems after heavy rainfalls. Access via Kuruman on the R31 is also
possible (sand road).
Further trip to Namibia: N10 via Karasburg (tarred) or R31 via Askham
and Rietfontein (gravel).
